News from the CES

Universal announced to stick to HD-DVD in the future.

About an hour ago we got the official Universal announcement which says that Universal will stick to HD-DVD. Here is the important statement.

5:00 pm ET January 10, 2008 -- Universal Studios has officially dispelled the rumors from Variety that it will drop HD DVD and switch to Blu-ray."Contrary to unsubstantiated rumors from unnamed sources, Universal's current plan is to continue to support the HD DVD format," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of HD strategic marketing for Universal Studios Home Entertainment and also co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group. The response would have come sooner, but many HD DVD executives were on flights home from CES when the story from Variety broke.

Non HD-DVD related but important nontheless

To All People In The World Having A Heart For Animals.

To everyone who loves animals as much as I do: Just take pressure on this zoo in sendig them emails stating how brutal you find it to let animals die just to save the money for food. 2 icebears just died of yesterday as their mother ate them up out of hunger. Please let them be the last animals to die in this zoo in such a brutal, unhuman way :(

Rumor has it?

Not everytime (to answer my self made question in the headline).

Many self named insiders already stated that Universal and Paramount would change sides again.

This is rather unrealistic. Both studios would lose their creditability in switching sides so often. Actually creditability is something of the same importance as money in this business.

I do also have some sources at the hand which I'll post in a (not so far) future update.

Update: 2 of 3 possible sources got proved right. So here they are.

Universal will support HD-DVD even further:

http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS35203+07-Jan-2008+PRN20080107

Toshiba interview. Support for HD-DVD will go on. The Warner made damage not as big as thought states Toshiba press woman.

So the only source left out right now is the Paramount source. I'll contact them immidately and ask them for a short statement.

Update 2: It's done. Paramount confirmed it already to Bloomberg so my message I sent to them a few minutes ago is actually outdated already:

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&sid=aQMGgh2LV_bU&refer=japan

So it seems like Paramount will stick to HD-DVD althought they could get out of the contract.

Credits go to following Highdef-Digest members for posting the sources: EM1 (Paramount Bloomberg link), PeterPP (Toshiba interview) and Pouyan for his fast response in posting the Universal statement only a few hours after the appliance of it on Reuters.

A serious petition.

I'd like to announce that HDNow (with the help of the Highdef community) has put up some serious petition now.

I'd bid you all to visit following page and sign in. This could be extremely neccesary in some ways (and maybe Warner turns his back again. Who knows for sure? ) and should also reflect the overall opinion of the HD-DVD fans. Warner should really see that we are still a big community and won't give up that easily (neither with nor without Warner)

Vote for the HD-DVD of the year 2007.

Maybe a little bit late but from now on everyone can vote for his favourite 2007 HD-DVD movie. Just write a comment in which you name your favourite HD-DVD movie of the last year. I'll count this as a vote for this movie then.

The winner of the vote will get a little tribute on this blog then.

The deadline (last day to vote) is the 25th of January. After which I'll begin to work on the tribute immidately.

Signed, Markus B.

Vote for the 1st review

From now on everyone can vote for the first HD-DVD movie review. You can vote on one out of 5 titles.

Those are namely:

Blade Runner

CSI N.Y "Sommermorde"/"Summer In The City" (from a German Toshiba/Imagion Promo disc)

Planet Earth

Pan's Labyrinth

2001: A Space Odyssey

My apologies for the bad CSI N.Y cover. I couldn't find a better one somewhere else

The beginning of this blog and the first sad announcement.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I welcome you to HD-DVD Saxony. "Yet another HD-DVD blog." you may think but I say "Maybe. But we'll have some nice surprises waiting for you in the near future. And I won't hesitate to buy the finest movies yet to be released. Thanks to the missing regionlock I'll not only test European releases but also US movies and the ones from Asia (I will also check some North-African sources as I got informed that some richer countries like Egypt or Dubai do have some HD-DVDs too.).

The point that moved me to open up this blog however is somehow sad.

I'm in need to inform you that AOL Time Warner and it's daughter companies (most memorable: New Line Cinema, the company behind such wonderful flicks like The Lord Of The Rings or The Golden Compass) cut HD-DVD support.

They'll however support the media till the beginning of June after which they'll be Blu-Ray exclusive.

But no need to really weep. Dry your tears as there are still some well producing studios left. Like Paramount/Dreamworks or Universal for example.

Signed, Markus B.

PS: Only 1 month and 3 days till my next birthday:) Not only a happy day for me but for all readers of this blog as I'll get some wonderful HD-DVDs for birthday. They will of course get some further reviews on this page.
